Janicki Industries leverages NX CAM to transform advanced and exotic materials.

Janicki Industries is an engineering and manufacturing company specializing in parts, prototypes and tools made of advanced composite materials and exotic metals. The company’s large-scale facilities and high-precision equipment design and build custom parts and tooling for an extensive range of industries, including aviation, aerospace, marine, energy, military, transportation and architecture.

Janicki Industries started as a company that sold large, 5-axis CNC machines, but has long since transitioned to using these precise machines — with machining envelopes up to 100 feet in length — to build large-scale composite tooling. To operate these large-scale mills, they need a powerful software package. That’s why they’ve worked with NX CAM for the past 12 years.

“We have 10 large-scale 5-axis machines we designed, built and programmed ourselves,” said Tim Van Horn, business systems developer with Janicki Industries. “The machines are specifically designed to handle complex, large-scale high-precision projects, and NX CAM is the go-to for running these machines.”

These extra-large, 5-axis, gantry-style CNC machines’ rotary axes have continuous contouring capabilities, allowing for large scale projects (up to 100’ x 20’ x 8’) while maintaining high precision and the ability to work with advanced composites and metals.

“Janicki Industries has always been known for their unique and proprietary CNC machining tools and methods,” said Acuity Account Executive Chris Trina. “As the company grew into a powerhouse in aerospace composites, they realized they needed a powerful CNC programming software that could match the level of sophistication in their tools and products. Acuity’s in-depth knowledge of both NX CAM and CNC programming has helped them scale to meet the tremendous growth the company has experienced over the past 20 years.”

“CAM is a very big selling point for NX,” said Van Horn. “It’s very strong, flexible and it has a lot of capabilities, especially the 5-axis part of it. That’s a big deal for us. The shapes that we mill require a lot of 5-axis work.”

These engineering solutions enable to company to produce large scale, high-precision prototypes, tools and production parts. And when things get complicated, they contact Acuity’s NX CAM specialist.

“It’s good to have a subject matter expert in-house at Acuity,” Van Horn said. “Ninety percent of the time we don’t need any help, but it’s that 10 percent of the time that throws you for a loop and it’s good to have someone to lean on.”

Software

NX CAM offers a complete set of solutions to improve manufacturing productivity. By making use of the latest machine tool technologies — as well as convenient task automation — NX CAM can save up to 90 percent on programming time and ensure that the job gets done right the first time on the shop floor.
