New Solid Edge Web Portal Speeds Design by Providing Millions of Supplier Parts

Siemens PLM Software announced a new supplier parts catalog web portal for Solid Edge® software – including the latest release, Solid Edge ST4 – that provides access to a massive number of commercially available and purchasable components and assemblies, in 3D native Solid Edge format. Eliminating the time needed to manually model purchased, supplier or catalog parts, the new on-line catalog – enabled through a new partnership with CADENAS GmbH – helps Solid Edge customers significantly improve product design productivity, quality and time-to-market.

“With today’s announcement, our Solid Edge customers now have access to millions of commercial, purchasable components they can drop right into their product designs without the need for additional modeling or the time consuming effort of understanding supplier product configurations or looking up part numbers,” said John Fox, vice president of Velocity Series Marketing, Siemens PLM Software. “In addition to this clear boost in productivity and design integrity, our customers will also benefit from knowing that the supplier parts they are incorporating into their products are orderable, available and certified by the manufacturers. The result is a reduction of potential production delays, enhancing Solid Edge users’ ability to get their products to market ahead of the competition.”

Proven strategic parts management

The new web portal announced provides individuals with access to a Solid Edge specific version of the PARTsolutions 3D catalog management system from CADENAS, a leading software manufacturer in strategic parts management and electronic product catalogs. The system enables Solid Edge users to find, reuse and control commercial parts, providing several methods of searching the data base, checking if configured parts have been previously downloaded, and controlling or restricting catalog access with project specific login.

The web portal contains no actual solid models because each native 3D Solid Edge model is built to order in real time. As a result, users have access to a massive number of parts – such as valves, actuators, bearings, etc. – and the system will automatically configure only the possible product sizes, options and features that are orderable and available from the manufacturers. Over 300 catalogs are available, with any one catalog having the ability to configure millions of components. By charging a fee to the companies represented on solidedge.partcommunity.com, CADENAS is able to provide models at no charge to Solid Edge users without infringing copyrights. End users can search for catalog parts based on a unique vendor or part number, and the ability to search for parts based on geometric size – which is useful when the shape is known but not the vendor – is expected to be available before the end of the year.

After a part or assembly has been selected, a complete package of information and geometry is available for instant access via e-mail, or via download to a directory on the user’s computer or directly into Solid Edge. In addition to the accurate 3D Solid Edge model – complete with a full feature tree and all defined interfaces necessary to easily model connecting parts – the user can also chose to receive detailed electronic product sheets and 2D views of the standard parts to be used in engineering drawings. Standard components are certified by each manufacturer to be accurate in geometric configurations and part numbers, ensuring proper form, fit and function within the final Solid Edge product design. The end result is significantly reduced assembly design time along with the ability to create more realistic assemblies and accurate parts lists with no additional work.

To ensure investment protection for users working with earlier versions of Solid Edge, Siemens PLM Software and CADENAS have made sure the models created through the new web portal are accessible to customers using versions as far back as Solid Edge 17. In addition, customers upgrading to Solid Edge ST4 will benefit from having a link to the portal from the main Solid Edge startup screen.

The new Solid Edge supplier parts web portal is available immediately and can be accessed at solidedge.partcommunity.com.

How to get your webkey

With your webkey account, you can manage your licenses, participate in user forums, download software and maintenance packs and much more.

Node Locked license upgrade to ST4

The licensing scheme for ST4 has changed and will now run on a composite ID, please read these important notes.

Siemens has also prepared a step-by-step guide and an FAQ specifically for Solid Edge Node Locked users.

Prepare to run ST3 & ST4 floating licenses simultaneously

If you need to run both ST3 and ST4 simultaneously in your organization, you'll need to follow the steps in this document.

ST4 floating license server installation

Follow these directions to install your new ST4 license server

Solid Edge Home/Laptop Use License

Home Use Criteria:

To utilize a home use license, a user must first meet the following terms and conditions (extracted directly from the Solid Edge License Agreement):

“If the Software is permanently stored on the hard disk or other storage medium of a stand alone computer and only one person uses that computer more than 80% of the time it is in use, then that same person may also use the Software either on a portable computer or on a home computer.”

One home/laptop use license is available for each permanent Solid Edge license your company has.  A home/laptop license is good for 6 months at a time, and can be renewed.

Start by obtaining your webkey (instructions above) if you don't already have it.

Next, login here using your webkey: http://www2.ugs.com/Support/LicenseManagement

Click the "Home" button and follow the remaining instructions.

Operating system requirements and information

Solid Edge ST4 has been certified to run on the following:

  • Windows XP Professional operating system (32-bit or 64-bit) with Service Pack 3
  • Windows Vista Business or Vista Enterprise operating system (32-bit or 64-bit) with Service Pack 2
  • Windows 7 Enterprise, Ultimate or Professional (32-bit or 64-bit) with Service Pack 1
  • Internet Explorer 9 (IE 6.0 meets minimum requirements)

Note: Internet Explorer is not required to be the default browser.

Note: Solid Edge stops certifying new releases against an operating system shortly after Microsoft drops mainstream support for it. Microsoft dropped mainstream support for XP in April 2009. Solid Edge ST4 is the last version to install on Windows XP. For ST4, we will not address XP operating system related issues or provide XP-specific fixes. Solid Edge ST5 will not install on XP.

Note: Solid Edge does not run on server operating systems.

Hardware System Requirements & Recommendations:

Siemens publishes a "minimum hardware system configuration" which we will list here.  However, please note that this configuration is not recommended by Acuity and will impact your productivity with Solid Edge.  Yes, the software will run (mostly), but not all that well!

Minimun System Configuration

  • 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • Any of the above operating systems
  • At least 1GB RAM
  • 65K Colors
  • Screen Resolution: 1280 x 1024 or higher
  • 3 GB disk space required for installation

Recommended System Configuration

  • 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor (at least 2 cores, 4 w/multi-threading is best)
  • Any of the above operating systems (Windows 7 64 bit recommended)
  • At least 4 GB RAM for part modeling, 8-16 GB RAM for assembly & large assemblies
  • 256 MB+ "Pro" (not gaming) graphics card
  • Screen Resolution: 1280 x 1024 or higher, 1920 x 1080 (HD) recommended
  • 3 GB disk space required for installation

Additional Display System Comments

Solid Edge will run on graphics drivers that support Windows XP or Windows Vista or Windows 7. For optimal performance, it is recommended to use a professional graphics card that is designed for CAD applications. For information about cards used in testing Solid Edge and results, refer to http://support.ugs.com/online_library/certification/. A 256MB graphic card or higher is recommended when working with large assemblies or complex parts.

When running Solid Edge, if you experience an abnormally high abort rate, parts disappearing, or other graphic anomalies you may not be using the appropriate graphics driver. For more details, visit the certification site noted  above.  This site details all of the Siemens-certified graphics cards by brand and model, and also provides information on laptops and workstations by brand and model.

It is very important to use a high quality, professional grade graphics sub-system to guarantee that all aspects of your CAD system will perform as expected.  Many known graphics errors and anomolies are caused by "gamer" type graphics cards that don't have all of the special feature support that today's CAD systems expect in order to perform all functions at the highest levels.
